I wanted to take a moment to thank the many partners for their various contributions to what was a landmark season at Bradford Beach. As someone who took the time 8 years ago to invest in the process of re-activating Bradford Beach, this was a process that I could not have done alone and I, along with the thousands of beach goers that returned to Bradford Beach this summer, thank you for your support.
Whether it was public knowledge or not, I feel that I would be selling short the efforts of those who helped this process:
On behalf of my partners, we would like to cordially invite you to our inaugural Bradford Beach Wrap Party, as a way to say thank you in person. The details of the party are as follows:
Date: Wednesday, November 12th, 2008
Time: 9pm to Close
Location: The Garage, 1701 N. Arlington Place,
Milwaukee, WI 53202
Many beach goers have asked me "what can I do?". It's simple. Express your support and appreciation of the beach to those who create policy for Milwaukee County. By drafting a note to Gerry Broderick, Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors (gbroderick@milwcnty.com) and Sue Black, Director of Milwaukee County Parks (sblack@milwcnty.com), they will read and record the positive feedback many of you have to offer. This is a great way to tell those who most need to hear how great the beach was this past summer.
Miller Brewing Company today announced a $500,000 investment in revitalization plans for Milwaukee's Bradford Beach.
With the investment, Miller joins a public-private partnership, the Bradford Beach Blue Wave Campaign, to restore the beach.
Miller president and chief executive officer Tom Long announced the donation at a press conference today at the Bradford Beach House, attended by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and other partners.
The Bradford Beach Blue Wave Campaign is a partnership between the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), the Milwaukee County Parks Department, the Greater Milwaukee Committee and private sector companies to attain Blue Wave status for Bradford Beach.
Blue Wave certification is granted by the independent, non-profit Clean Beaches Council and is America's first environmental certification for beaches. Only one other beach has achieved this status in the state of Wisconsin.
"It's important for Miller to be involved in efforts that improve the quality of life in our hometown and benefit the community where we do business," Long said. "Preserving and protecting our water resources is also one of our sustainable development priorities, so this initiative is one we are excited to be a part of."
Miller's donation will be directed toward environmental and coastal management improvement, including algae removal, seagull control, water quality monitoring and research and a public awareness campaign, as well as handicap accessibility equipment and the EPA Blue Wave application fee.
Also, $25,000 a year will go to the Great Lakes Water Institute to fund water quality testing and a beach web cam for recording purposes.
"We are thrilled to that Miller Brewing Company is a part of the revitalization efforts,” said Sue Black, director of Milwaukee County Parks. "This public-private partnership is an incredible collaborative effort between several Milwaukee organizations. It's a great example of groups working together to accomplish a goal that will really improve the quality of life for Milwaukee residents."
