BRADFORD BEACH WINTER PRO-AM VOLLEYBALL SERIES

 

The 13th annual Bradford Beach Winter Pro-Am Volleyball Series is set to kick-off December 1st and 2nd at Horny Goat Hideaway in Milwaukee, WI.  

The series features four indoor sand volleyball tournaments for Men's and Women's doubles at the Open and A skill level.  In addition, the series will include the 2nd Annual WINTER CALCUTTA blind draw co-ed 4's on February 9th.

The Winter Pro-Am Series is sanctioned by Volley America (volleyamerica.com).  All players competing on the series will receive National Player and Grand Prix Points.  Series sponsors include Bradford Beach, Horny Goat Hideaway, Spalding, Athletico, Autonomous, ROX and Zem Sandsocks.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

To register for any event, please visit https://bradford.bracketpal.com/signup.  All players must be current Volley America members to register.  Space for each event is limited based on division and gender.  The registration deadline is the Thursday prior to each event at 5pm.  If the field is full for a specific gender prior to the registration deadline, teams will be added to a waiting list and added if space becomes available the Friday prior to the event.

WINTER PRO-AM VOLLEYBALL SERIES SCHEDULE:

December 1st:  Men's & Women's Open 2's (space limited to 10 teams per division)

December 2nd:  Men's A 2's (space limited to 12 teams)

January 5th:  Men's & Women's Open 2's

January 6th:  Men's A 2's

February 2nd:  Men's & Women's Open 2's, Men's A 2's

February 9th:  WINTER CALCUTTA Blind Draw 4's

FORMAT:

The open divisions will use match play, best 2 of 3 games, rally scoring 21/21/15.  All teams will be seeded by current Volley America national player points.  The A division will use pool play with single elimination playoffs.  The tournament director reserves the right to adjust the format at any time.  Final event details will be released the Friday prior to each tournament.

MILWAUKEE SHOOTOUT ALL PRO EVENT - FRIDAY, AUGUST 3RD @ 5PM

IDEA:

All-Pro Cuervo Skills Challenge

The Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series continues to stake its claim as the ultimate beach volleyball tour, delivering intense men’s and women’s competition. Before the Milwaukee Shootout, Jose Cuervo will challenge beach volleyball’s elite to prove their standings in the All-Pro Cuervo Skills Challenge.

 

TIMING:

The All-Pro Cuervo Skills Challenge will occur Friday night from 5pm to 7pm, before the Shootout, as an attempt to further increase weekend crowds and showcase the pros intense skills. The pros will be required by IMG and Cuervo to compete in the Skills Challenge as part of the overall Shootout competition.

 

HOW IT WORKS:

Eight male and eight female pros competing in the Shootout will participate individually; each pro will be tasked to complete a series of five challenges. Each challenge will be scored from 1 to 5; athlete with the most points at the end of all five challenges wins. The winning female and male pro will take on the title of the 2012 All-Pro Cuervo Champion and extra $500 cash each.  Additionally, Cuervo will make a $1,000 donation total to a beach charity in the two winning pro’s name.

 

Recommended Five Challenges:

1.     Relay – One male and one female pro will be paired to create a team to perform a cycle of volleyball skills including serving, bumping, setting, and spiking. Names will be picked from a margarita glass to pair up athletes.  Ladies will serve first.  Each time a team successfully completes a cycle they will earn one point.  There will be a one minute time limit.  Once the ball hits the ground the cycle is over and the male will then get to serve.  The clock will reset.  Teams will receive a point for every cycle completed.  Net will be at women’s height.

2.     Crazy Serve – Each player will perform their most creative serve once. Judges (recommendations below) will award each serve between 1 and 5 points. Judges will score serves on creativity, technicality and skill.  Highest and lowest score will drop and the remaining scores will be added together. Players will go in alphabetical order by last name for remainder of the event.  Women will go first.

3.     Ace – Pros will compete in a timed serving contest where they will be challenged to hit three Cuervo objects (dummies used in the national consumer contest). The pros will need to serve at the objects moving right to left and will have 30 seconds to complete. Pro must be behind back court line.  The pro that hits all three objects the quickest wins and earns 5 points; second place will earn 3; third place will earn 1.  In an event of a tie, both/all pros will receive points.  Men will go first.

4.     Spiking accuracy – Each pro will receive 5 sets with the chance to hit (spike) a disk on the opposite side of the court. For each ball that hits a Cuervo disk, the pro will earn one point with a maximum opportunity of 5 points. This event will be timed at 60 seconds.  Women will go first.

5.     Pass Master – Pros will bump (only bumping, no setting) to themselves and if a pro allows the ball to drop they are disqualified. All eight men will go first, then women.  After 30 seconds of bumping, pros will have to bump with only one arm.  At this point, athlete must use the same hand for remainder of the challenge. After 1 minute, the pros will continue bumping with one arm but now can only stand/hop on one foot. At this point, athlete must use the same leg for jumping for the remainder of the challenge. If pros remain after 1 min 30 seconds, glasses of margaritas (water if limited) will be handed to the pros’ free hand at the back court line and they will be challenged not to spill. Player is automatically disqualified if any liquid spills from glass.  The last man standing will earn 5 points; second place will earn 3; third place will earn 1 point.

 

Tie Breaker:  In the event there is a tie, pros will be entered into a trivia round where pros will be asked three questions.  They will have 60 seconds to write down their answer.  Player with the most correct, wins.

 

Judges will be pulled from a variety of representation including one person from: IMG, Cuervo, Bradford Beach, local account manager, and local pro player.

The 5^th annual Endless Summer Beach Party returns to close out the summer season at BradfordBeach with performances by R. Mutt, Moloko Shivers, Moses’ Gunn and Stereoactive.  For you Marquette alumni, this is current version of the Jigglesfest party that had taken place on the lakefront many years ago.  Great show and a great way to close down the summer season at BradfordBeach.

Milwaukee to Host Beach Junior Tour Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 18, 2012) – The 2012 USA Beach Volleyball Junior Tour (BJT) will conclude with the 2012 BJT National Championships on July 28-29 at Bradford Beach in Milwaukee, Wis.

The 2012 BJT National Championship will be the largest ever with 209 teams from 20 states and 24 USA Volleyball regions.

What about the leagues?  With the growth of the leagues in 2011, we learned allot.  For all the success, there were growing pains.  The first thing is that our service will improve with the addition of dedicated league officials onsite every league night.  Second, court lines will be set-up and removed by the league officials each night.  Third, league scheduling, scorekeeping and court assignments will be improved to insure we are providing a consistent weekly schedule that respects the time and effort of our player........

Beach volleyball is back this summer at the all new Bradford Beach.  And what is all new?  Let’s start with our new partners from SURG Restaurant Group and their commitment to restore the beach house, new bathrooms, new concessions, three new tiki huts, external foot washes, new menu and much more.  The experience at the beach will be enhanced for everyone.

 

For our junior level beach volleyball players, Bradford Beach will offer several opportunities to learn the game, play weekly matches through the Bradford Beach Junior Beach Volleyball Development Program and two regional and national level tournaments.  

Bradford Beach will be hosting the US Open Junior Beach Volleyball National Championships on July 28^th and 29^th.  The top junior beach volleyball players from across the country will travel to Milwaukee and Bradford Beach to compete for who is the future star of United States beach volleyball. 

Bradford Beach has once again partnered with USA Volleyball’s Badger Region Volleyball Association to host the Badger Region Junior Beach Volleyball Championships on June 17^th.  Many of the top junior beach players from across the state of Wisconsin will be competing to represent the Badger Region and Bradford Beach at the US Junior National Championships in July..............

WINTER VOLLEYBALL LEAGUES TOURNAMENTS AND OPEN PLAY INFORMATION
As the Russian actor in the infamous DirecTV commercial stated “Opulence, I has it”, we can translate this to the Wisconsin Winter as “Snow, we has it”. Thank god we also have indoor sand volleyball facilities to get us through the winter for those of us who have yet to figure out that one can actually enjoy the outdoors in the winter.

For this winter, Bradford Beach will be offering for the first time a series of volleyball leagues, tournaments and open play, all located at Sussex Place. What players can look for to keep their beach volleyball game in tact is as follows:

LEAGUES:

Monday Nights – Men’s and Women’s Doubles starting on January 3rd
Sunday Nights – Co-ed Fours starting on January 9th
Friday Nights – Men’s Fours and Women’s Fours starting on January 7th

Registration is $100/team for doubles and $200/team for fours. All registration and league details can be found at http://bradfordbeachjam.com/sports_leagues.html. Registration is now open and the deadline for all entries is DECEMBER 30TH at 5pm. Leagues hours run from 6pm to 10pm starting January 3rd and concluding April 3rd.

Registration is $60/team for A and $80/team for Open. All registration and tournament details can be found at http://bradfordbeachjam.com/tournaments.html. Registration is now open and the deadline for each tournament is the preceding Wednesday at 5pm. Any registration after the deadline is subject to availability.

Note regarding format, schedule and prize money. Given the number of teams per division that register, the format, schedule and prize money details will be released the Thursday prior to the tournament. At this point, all divisions will play a double elimination format. Given that we only have 3 courts to try and run four divisions, there simply is not a perfect solution. Therefore, if you are planning to play, please expect that we will do everything we can to respect your time by scheduling the event in the most efficient manner possible.

Special Note – congratulations to our November 20th tournament winners Ben Shamrokh & Wayne Scott and Kathryn Babcock & Rasa Virsilaite.

Men’s King of the Beach, skill level Open:

Registration is $20/player and is limited to the first 12 registered players. All registration and tournament details are being handled by Larry Sorensen. Registration is now open by contacting Larry at larryjsorensen@hotmail.com. The registration deadline is the preceding Wednesday to each event at 5pm.


OPEN PLAY:

On non-league and tournament hours, Sussex Place has permitted players and groups to come in and play. The cost is $5/player/session and the players must contact Sussex Place prior to arrival by calling 262-820-3500. There are short court lines available to check out for those players looking to play doubles.

Bradford Beach and Sussex Place asks all players to observe the following simple rules:

1. If you are playing doubles and using short court lines, please return the big court lines to the court you played on.
2. No food or beverage carry-ins of any kind.
3. Place all garbage in the garbage cans.

The Open Play has been well attended through November and December with players of varying skill levels playing a mix of doubles, fours and sixes. All players are welcome.

WINTER - A TIME FOR BEACH VOLLEYBALL
As the (un)official leader of the anti-snow & cold movement, there is literally no way any of us could make it through the Wisconsin winter without being able to play beach volleyball.  Ok.  Indoor Sand Volleyball.  Either way, thankfully we have the OPTION to even play when the weather is far from convenient. 

Sussex Place has gladly opened their doors and facility to the opportunity of expanding programs and tournaments all designed for us players to get our fix and keep some lbs off and try and maintain a reasonable level of play in preparation for the summer.  Unlike in years past where it was just open play and tournaments, we will now offer leagues for co-ed 4's and doubles of varying skill levels.  This is unprecedented as no facility owner was previously willing to offer their courts in the winter to doubles players for leagues.  So let's not blow it and take advantage of the opportunity Sussex Place has provided by returning the favor and supporting the league and the restaurant.

We will be hosting our customary tournaments, with the first taking place on November 20th.  There will also be four "Larry" King of Beach events held on Sundays for those players who can never find a partner.  On top of all that, we have the opportunity for Open play on non-league and tournaments dates for players ranging from $100/player for the season or $5/player per 2-hour session.

THE SAND & BANDS ENDLESS SUMMER BEACH PARTY RETURNS!
The Sand & Bands Endless Summer Beach Party returns to Bradford Beach on September 18th.  Live music, volleyball, sand sculptures and more.
 
There is no better way to toast the last official weekend of summer than with 10 live bands, sand sculpture competition and some of the best beach volleyball teams from across the midwest.  On September 18th, Bradford Beach will be the place to be featuring the Bradford Beach Volleyball Series, Jigglesfest Music Festival and UWM's AIAS School of Architecture sand sculpture competition.
 
If volleyball is your thing, we have everything you could ask for.  The tournament features men's and women's pro doubles, men's and women's A doubles, men's B doubles and co-ed 4's.  Top ranked AVP Pro Paul Baxter of Venice, CA will be onsite and playing in the event in defense of his 2009 title.  To register for the event, click HERE.

BRADFORD BEACH FAMILY DAY IDEAL FUN FOR KIDS

Families, children and friends are welcome to attend “Family Day” at Bradford Beach, 2400 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, on Sunday, September 12th.  Parents are encouraged to bring the kids to the beach so they can have a blast and let their creative juices fly.

Volleyball for children with kids-sized nets and balls will be available all day long.  A sand-sculpting contest will start at noon until 3pm.   Tools will be provided for children and artistic creations will be judged each hour.  Fabulous prizes will be awarded donated by Kiwanis Milwaukee.

The Friends of Bradford Beach are offering passports for children to visit “stations” where they can learn about beach preservation, enter a drawing to win a prize and just have fun.  The drawing will take place at 2:30pm.  Also a treasure hunt will occur from noon to 12:30pm.  Children may take home what they find.

Children 11 and under can enter their artistic renderings into the Kiwanis Club of Milwaukee’s Bradford Beach Family Day Coloring Contest.  Visit the Sandcastle Contest table for crayons and entry forms.

BRADFORD BEACH 2010 LIVE MUSIC SCHEDULE!
Starting this Thursday, Bradford Beach has partnered with Cascio Interstate Music and 91.7FM WMSE to bring a new weekly acoustic program to the beach titled MUSIC BY THE FIRE.  Bon fires, soothing tunes and great atmosphere is all that is needed.  Free to the public.  Show starts each Thursday at 7pm starting this week with West of East.

Barefoot Wine presents the second annual AVPNext Championship Cup, that will give amateur beach volleyball players across the country the chance to compete against the sport’s most elite professional players, including gold medalists Kerri Walsh and Todd Rogers. This event will take place at Bradford Beach, 2400 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm with the winning men’s and women’s teams vs. the gold medalists playing at 3:00 pm.

This competitive series draws 96 amateur athletes from local men’s and women’s beach volleyball leagues in 24 cities across the U.S.  The winning male and female teams will earn the right to compete against Todd Rogers and Kerri Walsh, both Olympic gold medalists.  Barefoot Wine is committed to the advancement and expansion of beach volleyball throughout the United States.  All ages are invited to witness aspiring beach volleyball players from Milwaukee and across the country compete against the sport’s elite.

This event is free and open to the public.

BRADFORD BEACH JAM RESCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 20TH, 21ST, 22ND
As many of you know, or have now heard, Milwaukee received about 9 inches of rain last night.  I was at the beach this morning by 6:30am.  Due to the water and sand quality at Bradford Beach, aside from the other issues around Milwaukee, the Bradford Beach Jam rain date will be August 20th, 21st and 22nd.
 
If you have registered for any of the sports competitions, you will be receiving an e-mail from the tournament director on your particular volleyball, soccoer, dodgeball or rugby event.
 
We are in the process of re-booking all the acts that were scheduled to appear including King Solomon, RAS Movement, KoJo, Mount Zion Sound System and DJ Trini.
 
Stay tuned as we will update the details surrounding the re-scheduled Beach Jam as soon as possible.

THE RETURN OF THE AVP TO BRADFORD BEACH
1997 was the last year the AVP was officially on-site at Bradford Beach.  13 long years and many, many grassroot volleyball programs later, the AVP makes it's return to Bradford Beach with the AVP Developmental Tour on June 26th and the Qualifier Tour on July 10th.  Players from across the country will travel to Bradford to battle for cash and valuable AVP player points in hopes to earn their way onto the main draw of the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour.  The event is free to the public and with play beginning at approximately 8:30am.  For more details on each event, please visit the "event" section of bradfordbeachjam.com.

The AVP Qualifier Tour at Bradford Beach  is scheduled for July 10th & 11th.  The event will feature teams from across the United States competing for $10,000 in prize and the all important AVP main draw points. 
 Bradford Beach AVPNext will be offering additional divisions for Boys & Girls Junior Doubles (12 to 18), Mens & Womens A Doubles, and Co-ed Fours (two male, two female players).

BRADFORD BEACH SET TO HOST AVP BAREFOOT WINE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Matches start Thursday, May 20th at 6pm

Bradford Beach in Milwaukee, WI will feature the area’s top beach volleyball talent with the AVP Barefoot Wine Championship Cup.   The Association of Volleyball Professionals in partnership with G1, Inc will provide 58 male and female athletes the opportunity to compete in a 10 week beach doubles volleyball league where the top teams from each gender will advance to represent Bradford Beach at the AVP Barefoot Wine Championship Cup in Chicago on August 27th to compete with the champions from over 20 other national markets.

Teams at Bradford Beach will be competing for over $2,000 in cash and prizes, culminating with the championship rounds on July 22nd.  Teams advancing to Chicago will have the opportunity to compete for an additional $5,000 in cash and prizes.

“The Barefoot Wine AVPNext Series gives volleyball enthusiasts a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play in the big leagues,” said Joshua Fine, associate marketing manager of Barefoot Wine. “Not many people can quit their day job to travel and play competitively. This series helps people realize their dreams right there on the court.”

Of the teams scheduled to compete at Bradford Beach, the following highlights some of the more interesting players competing at in the Barefoot Wine Championship Cup Series:

Women:
•    Audra Jeffers, Wisconsin (’08).  Audra competed this past winter on the New Zealand Pro Beach Volleyball Tour with finishes of 2nd in Chistchurch, 3rd in Wellington and 5th in Mount Maunganui.  Engaged to former Badger basketball player and current NZ pro player Kirk Penney.  Jeffers will be competing with Sheila Shaw.

•    Sheila Shaw, Wisconsin (’07).  Sheila competed professionally with the Vilsbiburg Red Ravens in the premier German indoor volleyball league, Deutsche Volleyball Liga.  Shaw’s team had a fantastic season capturing the regular season championship.

•    Laura Voith, Wisconsin Eau Claire (’08).  Laura captured the inaugural Bradford “Queen” of the Beach title last summer.  Laura will be partnered with Ericka Schnor.

•    Heidi Pfeiffer, Marquette (’06).  Heidi is a former player at Marquette University and a driving force behind women’s beach volleyball in Milwaukee.  Laura will be competing with Leah Tenney.

Men:
•    Jason Zaeske & Nick Momcilovic.  Cudahy’s finest have the longest partnership of any team in Milwaukee having played over 15 years as teammates.  Jason and Nick represented Bradford Beach last year in San Francisco at the AVP Barefoot Wine Championship Cup.  They will once again play together this season.

•    Dan Mathews, Ohio State (’06).  Dan was a former standout setter at Shorewood High School and Ohio State.  Dan played professionally this past season in Spain where his team had a 22 match win streak and captured the league championship.  Dan will be playing with his brother Eric.

•    Mike Hutz, Loyola (current).  Mike was the ’06 state player of the year at Marquette High School leading his team to the state championship in his senior season.  Now a junior at Loyola, Hutz is the starting setter for the Ramblers and a 1st team all-MIVA selection in 2010.  Hutz will be competing with Todd Gawronski.

•    Todd Gawronski.  Gawronski is the partner to Milwaukee County in the daily operation and development of Bradford Beach.  In addition, Gawronski is the local promoter of all major beach volleyball events at Bradford Beach in partnership with the AVP and USA Volleyball and has over 20 years of playing experience competing in events across the United States.

AVPNext Boys & Girls Junior Volleyball Instruction League Registration Now Open
Bradford Beach will host a 9 week instructional beach volleyball league for Boys & Girls ages 12 to 19.  The league will be under the direction of Todd Gawronski, the AVPNext sanctioned event promoter of Bradford Beach.  Players will be taught the fundamental aspects of doubles beach volleyball.  Registration fee is $50 for a 2-person boys or girls team.  For more information, click here.

         

AVP Announces 2010 Schedule

LOS ANGELES—The AVP today announced its 2010 schedule, which consists of 12 stops across the United States, from the East Coast to the Midwest and back to Southern California.
 
Pro beach volleyball will visit the following cities this season:

Huntington Beach, Calif.  -  June 3-6

San Francisco Bay Area*  -  Aug. 14-15
Manhattan Beach, Calif.  -  Aug. 19-22

Los Angeles, Calif.*  -  Sept. 17-19

The AVP has partnered with other large beach events to provide more exposure to the sport and more fun for fans in Santa Barbara, Huntington Beach, Hermosa Beach, Malibu and Manhattan Beach.
 
Santa Barbara: The AVP has partnered with CBS College Sports Network and the American Volleyball Coaches Association to host the fifth annual ALT GAMES: Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship run in cooperation with USA Volleyball, showcasing the nation’s top women’s collegiate volleyball players May 1-2.
Huntington Beach: The U.S. Open of Bodyboarding and a Professional Longboard Association event will be co-located with the AVP tournament.
Hermosa Beach: The AVP will host the AAU Best of the Beach July 17-18 in conjunction with the inaugural All-American Volleyball Sand Showcase Camp July 12-14 for advanced girls ages 13-18.
Malibu: The AVP tournament will be located within the Malibu Surf & Sport Festival, adding to fans’ beach sports experience.
Manhattan Beach: AVP legends will square off on Stadium Court in a North Bay vs. South Bay rematch of last season’s special event.
 
Chicago also marks a major weekend, as the Aug. 27-29 event will be the Tour Championship. Mason will host the Tournament of Champions the following weekend. The AVP will then return to Southern California for its final 2010 event, a postseason specialty tournament. Tickets, final locations and formats will be available soon at avp.com.
 
In support of the nationwide tour, the AVP has focused on effective outreach to the volleyball community. 2010 will see the AVP expand its grassroots outreach in four ways: a larger Qualifier Tour, a Developmental (“U26”) Tour, AVP/California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) Qualifiers, and the Barefoot Wine AVPNext Series.
 
The Qualifier Tour will consist of nine two-day tournaments offering AVP main draw points and prize money. The AVP has partnered with MotherLode to stage the Western Qualifier Tour Championship at the prestigious MotherLode Volleyball Classic in
Aspen, Colo., on Labor Day Weekend. The AVP has also partnered with East End Volleyball to stage the Eastern Qualifier Tour Championship Oct. 9-10 in Clearwater, Fla. These events will be open to all AVP members. The team from each gender that
accumulates the most 2010 Qualifier Tour points will receive automatic main draw entry into the first four large-field (32 teams or more) events of 2011.  
 
The Developmental (“U26”) Tour, for up-and-coming players age 26 and under, will consist of five two-day tournaments offering AVP main draw points and prize money. The team from each gender that accumulates the most 2010 U26 Tour Points will
receive automatic main draw entry into the first four large-field events of 2011.
 
Six AVP/CBVA Qualifiers, held in California, will award each gender’s winner automatic entry into a corresponding 2010 AVP main draw. 
 
Twenty-four leagues around the country will participate in the Barefoot Wine AVPNext Series. Each league’s winner will advance to a one-day qualifier held Aug. 27 in Chicago in conjunction with the AVP Tour Championships. Winners of the qualifier will advance to the main draw.

2010 Barefoot Wine AVPNext Series Tour Announcement

LOS ANGELES, March 1, 2010—On the heels of a renewed partnership for 2010,  Barefoot Wine and the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour kick off the second annual  Barefoot Wine AVPNext Series with 24 participating leagues. The competitive series takes place at barefoot-friendly beach volleyball courts around the country and gives amateur players a chance to go toe-to-toe against AVP’s top professional teams.
